Spotlight Project: Murray Hill Pied a Terre

Welcome to Woodstock Tower located in Murray Hill, NYC. Technically located in Tudor City (though New Yorkers never really know where one neighborhood ends and one begins), Woodstock Tower is a majestic, pre-war building built in1929 and is located between1st and 2nd Avenue on 42nd Street. My clients, whose main residence is in New Jersey, bought the condo to use as a pied a terre for trips to the city with their family. Lucky ducks!

The apartment, though small, has great views of the East River and is perfectly located close to theaters and fabulous restaurants. It’s really all you need when you’re in the most amazing city in the world!

This was a tricky apartment to design because of the size and the needs of the client. Of course, when most people visit the city, they expect to sleep on a couch or air mattress, which is fine, but when you have a family of four slumber-partying in a small apartment you have to consider the needs of each person. So to keep the space as minimal as we could, we streamlined the palette and kept the furniture to a minimum. Instead of adding color, we incorporated fun patterns and prints and, as with a lot of my projects in New York City, I used acrylic and glass as well as mirrors.

Acrylic and glass allow your eye to travel to the far side of the room making the space appear larger than it is while the mirrors not only allow the room to seem bigger, but bounce light making a typically dark space feel brighter and more spacious.

Instead of a TV stand, we used dresser that each person can use to store their personal items. We also left space under the bed to stash bags and luggage when they came into the city. We were sure to leave enough space to relocate the coffee table if needed to allow for an air mattress.

Against my natural instinct to add art above the bed and on the TV wall, we decided to leave them blank so that the client wasn’t overwhelmed with stimuli. Instead, we used interesting mirrors that acted as art. To finish it off, we added fun coffee table books and one big, beautiful bouquet of flowers for that pop of color. Simple, easy, gorgeous, and functional.
