Create the Perfect Cozy Nook
As a born-and-bred New Englander, there’s one thing I can always count on: snowy days wrapped up in a chunky knit blanket, a great book in hand, and a warm beverage within reach. There’s truly nothing like it. But I know not everyone is lucky enough to experience snowfall each year—so no matter where you live, if you’re looking to create a cozy retreat in your home, I’ve got the perfect recipe for you.
find the perfect space
When we want to relax and unwind, we often gravitate toward the usual cozy spots—the couch or the bed. And while those are great, they’re also high-traffic areas that don’t always offer the solitude we crave. Instead, I love finding unexpected spaces to transform into a personal retreat, a little escape from the daily hustle.
Think about an underutilized corner of your home or a window nook where you could add a bench with plush cushions. Maybe your guest room doesn’t get much use—could it double as a serene hideaway? Or perhaps there’s an empty space under the stairs or an unused closet just waiting to be reimagined. The goal is to carve out a quiet corner where you can sink in and truly disconnect.
set the mood with paint
There’s no hard-and-fast rule when it comes to color, but I always lean toward neutral, calming tones. A limewash effect on the walls adds depth and texture without overwhelming the space. Two of my favorite go-to shades are Benjamin Moore White Dove and Farrow & Ball Wevet—both are soft, inviting, and the perfect foundation to build upon.
layer on the comfort
The key to creating a truly inviting nook? Layers. Start with a plush mattress, cushion, or seat—something you can really sink into. Then, add more pillows than you think you need, and top it all off with cozy blankets. In the warmer months, you can stash away a few blankets or keep them all and crank up the AC—it’s all about what feels right to you.
light it right
Beyond soft furnishings, lighting is the single most important element in setting the mood. If your nook is near a window, consider adding sheer curtains for privacy while still letting in soft, diffused light. Any overhead or task lighting should ideally be on a dimmer so you can adjust the brightness to suit the moment. And, of course, nothing makes a space feel cozier than candlelight. A few well-placed candles will instantly elevate the ambiance.
add the personal touches
This is where the magic happens—infusing the space with everything that makes it uniquely yours. Think about how you want to use this retreat. Will it be a reading nook? A nap zone? A tranquil meditation space?
If you’re designing it for reading, add a small bookshelf and a warm-toned reading light. Love music? A compact speaker can set the perfect mood. Maybe a tiny side table for your coffee, tea, or a favorite snack. If you want to watch your go-to shows, a wall-mounted iPad holder could be a game-changer. And for the plant lovers—go wild! Just aim for a balance between comfort and function. You don’t want to feel like Harry Potter under the stairs, surrounded by clutter.
don’t overthink it
At the end of the day, this space is all about relaxation. Make it work for you. For me, that means a mini bar stocked for the perfect martini and a great cookbook to flip through.story online can make all the difference.
