Entertain Outside Like a Pro!

Backyard Entertaining

Ahh, summer is finally here! Though for some of us, it’s not exactly the chill, carefree season we dream about. With long work weeks and packed schedules, making the most of warm weather can feel like a challenge. I’m right there with you—which is why, when the weekend hits, there’s nothing better than gathering my closest friends for an epic backyard hang.

Looking to throw the ultimate backyard bash?
Let’s make it effortless, stylish, and most importantly—fun.

Start with a theme.
Whenever I host, I love giving the party a loose theme. Nothing over the top—just a little thread that ties everything together. It could be as simple as “Taco Tuesday” or “Italian Summer.” Let your menu nod to the theme and carry it through with decor that feels intentional but easy.

A few of my favorite themes for a summer party:

  • Seafood Boil: Don’t live by the ocean? No problem. Grab some fresh seafood from your local fishmonger and host the ultimate boil wherever you are.

  • Backyard Rodeo BBQ: Think hay bales, bandanas, and cowboy vibes. No time to cook? Order barbecue from a local spot and serve it up at home.

  • Glamping Night: Create cozy sleeping arrangements (even if no one’s staying over). Adults love a playful, nostalgic theme more than you’d think.

  • Outdoor Movie Night: Hang a sheet, fire up a projector, and serve popcorn, nachos, and candy. Settle in for a cozy night under the stars.

Not into themed parties? No problem. If you’re just looking to host friends for a relaxed evening outside, here are my tried-and-true tips for being the ultimate backyard host.

Get out of the kitchen.
The best part of entertaining outdoors is… being outdoors—with a drink in hand, surrounded by friends. Don’t get stuck inside. Prep your indoor dishes before guests arrive, and when the party starts, let the grill do the work.

Most people think grills are just for burgers and dogs, but you can do so much more. Sure, surf and turf is always a win, but grilled bruschetta, pizzas, and even warm salads are great options too. If I’m serving something with a sauce, I’ll throw a skillet right on the grill to make it on the spot—easy and full of smoky flavor.

Another hosting lifesaver? The crockpot. Want to serve shrimp and grits? Make the grits ahead of time and keep them warm in the crockpot. When it’s time to serve, just grill the shrimp. Done and done.

Favorite dishes to serve outdoors:

Batch your cocktails.
No one wants to be stuck shaking cocktails all night. I always tell guests to bring whatever they like to drink, but I also love welcoming everyone with a pre-made cocktail. I mix a big pitcher ahead of time, chill it, and pour it up when guests arrive. After that, it’s DIY—plus wine with dinner, always. And don’t forget: stock up on ice!

Go-to cocktails for summer:

Save room for dessert.
Let’s be real—no one wants to bake a cake in the middle of a heatwave. I keep prepped cookie dough in the freezer, rolled and ready to go. When the time comes, defrost, bake, and serve. Easy, fast, and still homemade. And yes, they pair perfectly with store-bought ice cream.

Favorite summer desserts:

Think of the pups.
Your four-legged guests deserve a treat too. I freeze dog treats in yogurt or water using ice cube trays, and I always set out a little kiddie pool so they can cool off while the humans party.

Design matters—but keep it chill.
If your backyard is lush and green, let nature do the heavy lifting. But a few cozy, functional touches go a long way. Layer your seating with cushions and throws, especially if the night will run long. Use candles and twinkle lights to create a warm, romantic glow. I love incorporating fresh herbs or fruit into my tablescapes—it adds scent, color, and charm.

Helpful extras:

  • Bug spray

  • Citronella candles

  • Handheld fans for hot afternoons

Follow these easy tips and you’ll be the backyard host everyone wants an invite from all summer long.
